Why Golden Thread
A whole person. A life still unfolding.
A person's story includes the people they love, the phrases they return to, the routines that steady a day, and the experiences that made them who they are.
Golden Thread starts there. Its care philosophy brings memory, companionship, family participation, and legacy preservation into one proposed experience, shaped around the person and the people who care for them.
Technology should strengthen the human circle of care.
The Bus Stop · Project philosophy
What does it mean to help someone find home?
Imagine an older person waiting for a bus to take them home. The route no longer runs, and the person they hope to see has died. Yet their wish to get home, and the love behind it, are sincere.
The Bus Stop thought experiment begins with sitting beside them and listening. Companionship can acknowledge that love without promising a bus will arrive or inventing a message from someone who has died. It keeps practical help and connection to human caregivers close.
“What can I offer that is true, kind, and useful to this person now?”
This is the project's starting question: attentive companionship that respects the person, their choices, and what matters to them.

The proposed everyday experience
Familiar things. Meaningful moments.
The project brings together four ways to support connection. Each would be guided by the person's preferences, family knowledge, and accountable human care.
It starts with listening
A family-guided memory profile
Names, relationships, photographs, stories, familiar phrases, values, cultural or spiritual context, daily routines, calming anchors, and topics to avoid—chosen together to help the experience feel personal and respectful.
01 · Companion Mode
A familiar place to begin a conversation.
Gentle conversation grounded in the person's approved memory profile, with familiar stories, relationships, and routines available as starting points.
The aim: an experience that recognizes what matters to this person.
02 · Family Message Capture
A loved one's voice, close at hand.
Family-approved messages and voice notes would offer another way for loved ones to be present in an ordinary day, including when they cannot be in the room.
The material: real messages from the people in their circle.
03 · Caregiver Summary
Useful context for the people who care.
Clearly identified, non-diagnostic summaries could help caregivers review emotional themes and familiar sources of comfort, with human judgment guiding any response.
The focus: what mattered in conversation and what helped bring ease.
04 · Legacy Archive
A place for the stories worth keeping.
Chosen stories, messages, and authentic recordings would be preserved with their context and permissions, so meaningful moments can remain part of family life.
The material: a person's own words, laughter, and stories.
The thread across a lifetime
Care comes first. Memories can carry on.
Present-day care is the starting point. The longer-term vision gives selected moments a path from everyday connection into a family legacy.
01 · Care now
Care companion
Support familiar conversation and family connection around the person living their life today.
02 · Chosen moments
Golden Moments
Save real words, laughter, and stories, with permission and the context that gives them meaning.
03 · Preserved connection
Legacy Mode
Let authorized loved ones revisit saved moments and listen to authentic recordings over time.
04 · Future design
Witness object
A possible future heirloom: the pendant that accompanied a person through care, passed on with the moments they chose to preserve.
Legacy Mode is designed around what the person actually shared: preserved recordings and their context, with no newly invented messages presented as words from someone who has died.
Dignity in the design
The person stays at the center.
Consent, privacy, and family roles belong in the everyday experience. These commitments are part of the project's care philosophy from the beginning.
Participation with permission
Seek informed consent wherever possible, with family or legal representative permission where appropriate. Preferences, comfort, and the choice to pause should guide participation.
Control over what is kept
Plan clear controls for adding, storing, sharing, and deleting material. Collect only what is needed for the agreed purpose, and make AI-generated summaries identifiable.
A clear circle of care
Give family members and caregivers access according to their agreed roles. Keep human responsibility for care decisions visible and central.
Where the project stands
A considered foundation. A collaborative next step.
Golden Thread has an executive summary, a care and ethics framework, a proposed feature set, and a staged pilot pathway. The work now calls for care, community, research, and technology collaborators to help shape a responsible next phase.
Review and shape a bounded pilot
The next phase would bring people with lived experience, families, caregivers, and prospective partners into review of the concept, consent process, and prototype. Any pilot would need an agreed scope, human oversight, and a clear way to evaluate the experience.
Explore a simple voice interface
The proposed hardware direction is a pendant with a speaker and microphone, paired with a phone, tablet, or computer. A pendant or later witness object would require further design and manufacturing partnerships; neither is an available device.
Current stage: development and collaboration. The experiences described here are proposed; clinical benefits have not been established. Golden Thread is intended to support families and accountable human care, alongside existing care services.
